Arteta convinced Jorginho to join Arsenal as ace admits he was ‘no longer’ in Chelsea plans

Jorginho, Arsenal, February 2023

Jorginho has revealed Mikel Arteta “surely” played a big part in his Arsenal transfer, and after he called the move went quickly, as he knew he was “no longer part” of plans at Chelsea.

Jorginho had been a fixture of the Blues side for the majority of his time at the club. Indeed, in four and a half years he racked up 213 appearances.

Despite there being other quality midfielders at the club, he never missed more than 10 games in the league in a single season.

As such, with his contract at Stamford Bridge ending at the end of this season, it might have been a surprise to see Chelsea let him leave rather than offer him a new deal.

He’s 31 years old, but certainly looks as if he’s got a few years ahead of him. Contract negotiations, if they did happen, went nowhere, though, and the Italian made a deadline day move to Arsenal.

Jorginho has since revealed that Arteta played a big role in his decision to move.

“It’s one of the reasons, surely,” he told DAZN.

What’s more, the midfielder apparently knew he had no future at Stamford Bridge, so the Arsenal move was perfect.

“He called me and it was all very quick, we made the deal in less than 48 hours. I had spoken to Chelsea and I knew I was no longer part of their plans. I wanted to progress in my career and the Arsenal project suits me.

“It’s a young team that plays good football and fits my characteristics. I considered every scenario and made the decision. Sometimes you must accept when you are out of a project and that things come to an end.”

Indeed, Jorginho could have played on at Chelsea for a few more years, had they offered him a new deal. His performances at the start of his career at the Emirates have shown he can still have an impact at the top level.

However, the Blues saw the opportunity to make some cash from the star and go forward with their new-look side.

Arsenal have been the beneficiaries of that and Jorginho could end the season with a Premier League winner’s medal.
