Tottenham have failed in their attempts to sign former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster to cover for injured captain Hugo Lloris, according to reports.
It was revealed last week that Lloris is set to miss up to two months with a knee injury after sustaining the injury in Spurs’ 1-0 win over Manchester City just over a week ago.
Scans showed he sustained ligament damage following a challenge late in the game, though Lloris is not expected to need surgery.
Fraser Forster has now stepped into Lloris’ shoes but Tottenham got off to a terrible start without their number one as Leicester put four past them on Saturday in a 4-1 defeat for Antonio Conte’s men.
Speaking ahead of the match against the Foxes, Tottenham assistant boss Cristian Stellini was confident that Forster can provide adequate cover for Lloris.
“I like Fraser like a man because he is a very good man,” Stellini said.
“His behaviour in this season was perfect. Every day he pushes himself to train really hard and with this behaviour he pushes Hugo to train very hard.
“He is a great man before a great goalkeeper because we don’t have to forgot we are men before we are player.
“I like Fraser. The difference between Hugo is we start to think physically. He (Fraser) is a keeper perfect for the Premier League style, for the type of game we are going to play in the Premier League and he uses both feet when he plays with the ball.
“So, it will be interesting to see him for some weeks to play with us. We trust in him, we completely trust in him.”
But Tottenham have been keen to bring in more cover with the Daily Mail revealing Spurs ‘have seen a plan to lure former England goalkeeper Ben Foster out of retirement thwarted by the Premier League’.
Tottenham have ‘explored the possibility of signing a new goalkeeper on a short-term contract outside of the transfer window’ and Foster ‘was a leading candidate to fill the void left by Lloris’ in a ‘shock bid’
But the Daily Mail explain why Foster won’t be joining Tottenham:
‘In certain circumstances, clubs are able to register players outside of the transfer window – but require special dispensation to do so.
‘However, their initial intention of tempting former Manchester United and West Brom man Foster out of retirement to sign for the club he supported as a boy, or signing any other goalkeeper, will not be cleared by the Premier League under their current rules – news that arrives as a further blow to…
