Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur will reportedly be out for ‘at least six months’ after suffering a knee injury in Saturday’s loss to Leicester City.
Antonio Conte’s side were demolished 4-1 by the Foxes on Saturday afternoon, less than a week on from their 1-0 win against Manchester City.
To rub salt in the wounds, Bentancur was forced off after a collision with Leicester midfielder Nampalys Mendy.
The Uruguayan required a stretcher after requiring oxygen.
He did manage to limp down the tunnel after leaving the field of play, however.
He will miss ‘at least six months’ as a result, meaning his season is over.
The 25-year-old may also miss the beginning of 2023-24 due to the lengthy rehabilitation process.
This is another long-term injury sustained in recent weeks with Conte also without club captain Hugo Lloris, Ryan Sessegnon and Yves Bissouma.
Without Lloris for six to eight weeks, Sessegnon for six weeks, and Bentancur and Bissouma for the rest of the season, Tottenham are facing an uphill battle to qualify for the Champions League.
Bentancur was probably the last player – besides Harry Kane – Tottenham fans would have wanted to pick up a long-term injury.
The former Juventus midfielder has been excellent under Conte since signing from the Old Lady in January 2022.
This knee injury means Bentancur may well have played his last game under the Italian head coach.
Conte is out of contract at the end of the season and his future has been called into question several times during his spell in north London.
Missing out on the top four this term could be the final straw for the former Chelsea boss, who has taken charge of 68 Spurs games.
The future of Conte will reportedly influence Clement Lenglet’s decision on his future at the end of the season.
Lenglet joined Spurs on a season-long loan from Barcelona last summer and has been in and out of the starting XI this term.
The Frenchman has been an unused substitute in his side’s last three Premier League matches.
According to Football Insider, Conte’s future is ‘key’ in Spurs’ attempts to sign Lenglet on a permanent basis after the Italian helped lure him to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
