Ten Hag After Casemiro Red Card: 'VAR is Interfering'

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was left frustrated by the VAR who he claims was “interfering” by sending off Casemiro in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace.

The Red Devils claimed three points but were made to sweat in the final 20 minutes after Casemiro was given his marching orders in the 70th minute for grabbing the neck of Will Hughes.

The incident was part of an all-in melee, but after VAR called over referee Andre Marriner to review the incident, he opted to send off the Brazilian for “violent conduct”, which left Ten Hag bemused.

“I’ve seen the incident, where the Crystal Palace player takes a big risk to bring an injury to Antony and then the emotions got really high, for several players,” Ten Hag said.

“And then they pick one player out, so I think they could have picked more players in such an incident and then the VAR is interfering.

“This is what I don’t understand because then you have to be consistent. I have so many occasions this season where they didn’t interfere so I was disappointed but we have to take it.

“Our players have to behave, they have to control their emotions, but I’m happy that we have the spirit and we stand for each other.”

Violent conduct triggers an automatic three-match suspension meaning United will lose Casemiro, one of their key players, for crucial clashes against Leeds United twice and Leicester City.

United, who qualified for the EFL Cup final in midweek, are third in the Premier League with 42 points from 21 games, eight behind leaders Arsenal and three behind two-placed Manchester City who both have a game in hand.

The Red Devils havent won any silverware since 2017 and while the Premier League may be a stretch, they are in contention again, while the EFL Cup looms large.

“I give the credit to the team, I am really happy with the progress we have made,” Ten Hag said.

“I will be proud at the end of the season when we are lifting trophies. Till that moment, we have to work hard to improve everyday.”
