Leeds deadline day antics could bite them, as star may still leave after January exit was blocked

Jack Harrison, Leeds United, January 2023

Leeds United reportedly held off approaches from Aston Villa and Newcastle United for Jack Harrison, as well as pulling the plug on his Leicester City move, but he may still exit the club.

Harrison has been one of Leeds’ most important players over the past few seasons. He’s scored eight Premier League goals in both of his two full top-flight seasons at the club.

What’s more, this season, only five outfield players have featured more often. As such, that Marsch was potentially going to let him go was something of a surprise.

The manager sanctioned a £20million exit to Leicester City. However, in a strange turn of events, during Harrison’s medical with the Foxes, the deal was called off.

Reports suggested Leeds had matched the contract offer from the Midlanders, and Harrison returned to the club. While the winger was reportedly happy with that, an update on the situation could spell bad news for the Whites soon.

Indeed, 90min reports Harrison will only pen new terms ‘if he feels he’s an important part’ of the manager’s plans. With a new midfielder and a new forward joining in January, it’s not clear how much his game time will suffer.

That he’s a winger, and the two inbounds play in central areas, could mean he’s still a firm fixture in Marsch’s plans.

If not, though, Leeds could be left with egg on their face. Indeed, the report suggests not only did they pull the plug on his Leicester move, but they rejected approaches from Aston Villa and Newcastle United.

They were going to make £20million from selling a player they spent around £11million on, and a move to either of the other clubs could have been even more lucrative.

Should Harrison not renew his contract, his value will plummet, as he nears the end of his deal, which runs out in 2024. Marsch will want to keep the forward happy, so that that doesn’t happen and the club haven’t blocked his exit in January for no reason.
