Tottenham confirm Porro signing ‘on loan with obligation to buy’ on reported long-term contract

Tottenham target Pedro Porro during a match

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of Sporting Lisbon right-wing-back Pedro Porro on loan with an obligation to buy at the end of the season.

The Premier League outfit pursued Porro for several weeks and a deal looked like it had all been agreed earlier this month.

However, David Ornstein reported on deadline day eve that the deal was off after Sporting changed their demands having already accepted a €45million bid.

Despite this, and having Hector Bellerin lined up as Porro’s replacement, Sporting made things a lot more difficult for Tottenham.

Romano provided plenty of updates on the situation after saying ‘here we go’ for the transfer.

Tottenham and Sporting had talks to resolve the situation after the player said goodbye to the Portuguese club’s fans following his side’s 2-0 defeat to FC Porto on Saturday.

Porro didn’t train with Sporting on Monday in order to try and force a move to north London.

Romano gave hope to Spurs fans on Monday night by saying the transfer was finally expected to go through on deadline day.

The fee is still believed to be €45m, though the terms have been altered in order to appease Sporting.

Porro then completed his medical on Tuesday with Romano once again saying ‘here we go’.

On Tuesday evening, the Italian journalist confirmed that Porro has put pen to paper on a contract that will last until the summer of 2028.

Speaking on Monday, Porro told reporters in Portugal: “I’m grateful to Sporting, I love the club — I didn’t train as I was only focused on the transfer to Spurs but I will always be thankful to the club.”

Porro permanently joined Sporting from Manchester City last summer after a successful loan spell.

Sporting included a £40m release clause in his contract, though they reportedly made it so it could not be triggered in the final 12 days of a transfer window. Sneaky b*stards…

Porro did not make a single appearance for City, who sold him for €8.5m.

The 23-year-old has an impressive three goals and 11 assists in 23 matches across all competitions this term.

Spurs eventually confirmed the signing late on Tuesday evening.

A club statement read: ‘We are delighted to announce the signing of Pedro Porro from Sporting CP.

‘The right-back will join the Club on loan until the end of the season, with an obligation to make the deal permanent in the summer. He will wear the number 23 shirt.’
