Chelsea target Enzo Fernandez has been given permission to undergo a medical in Portugal.   

Benfica have allowed the Argentinian to undergo the necessary tests, but it is just a precaution in case a deal can be reached – after reports in Portugal broke earlier that he was closer to staying put.

Chelsea remain hopeful that they can still pull off a British record deal for Fernandez before the 11pm deadline and by being cleared to have a medical, another part of the potential move has been set up if an agreement is reached between the two clubs.

That comes with Fernandez set to sit out Benfica’s visit to Arouca tonight, with his omission removing another possible obstacle in the way of him completing a move to Stamford Bridge. 

Sportsmail understands the two clubs are in talks as we speak, with some Benfica officials waiting for discussions to conclude before heading off for tonight’s game.

Portuguese media are also reporting that Fernandez is undergoing his Chelsea medical at Lisbon’s Hospital of Light. 

Argentina’s World Cup hero has been chased by the west London outfit for most of the January transfer window, with the move for the midfielder becoming topsy-turvy after being called off and then put back on track.

Chelsea believe a £105m deal for the 22-year-old can be done today and fans have claimed to have spotted a private jet land in Lisbon to conclude the transfer.
