Washington Spirit Signs Goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury to New Contract

Washington Spirit Announces Official Preseason Roster

January 30, 2023 – National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL)Washington Spirit News Release

Washington, D.C. – Washington Spirit captain and goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury has re-signed with the team on a new three-year contract with a team option for 2026, the club announced today. The new contract will take effect immediately, replacing Kingsbury’s current contract which was set to expire after the 2023 season.

Kingsbury appeared in 27 total matches and made 86 saves for the Spirit in 2022, only missing time for international duty during last summer’s Concacaf W Championship in Mexico. Since joining the Spirit in 2018, Kingsbury has won two NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year awards (2019 and 2021) and was named the NWSL Championship MVP after the Spirit won its first league title in 2021.

“I couldn’t be more excited to sign a long-term contract with the Spirit,” said Kingsbury. “No one is investing in women’s sport like Michele Kang is. The Washington Spirit is assembling a championship-caliber team of staff and players alike, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”

Hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio, Kingsbury attended Wake Forest University before beginning her professional career. In her final three seasons with the Demon Deacons, Kingsbury (then Bledsoe), maintained a 0.81 goals against average with 218 career saves in over 6,500 minutes of playing time. Kingsbury was a three-time All-ACC selection, twice named to the First Team and once to the Second Team, while also earning Second Team All-American honors in her final season in Winston-Salem. Following her collegiate career, Kingsbury spent time playing professionally in Norway and Denmark as well as with Sky Blue FC (NJ/NY Gotham FC) and the Orlando Pride in the NWSL before joining the Spirit.

“Aubrey has consistently been one of the best performers in this league across all areas of goalkeeping,” said Head Coach Mark Parsons. “She has been an integral player and person for this team and I am looking forward to our staff supporting her to take the next steps in her development.”
