Tim Sherwood thinks Arsenal target Moises Caicedo “needs to look at” what has happened to former Brighton team-mate Yves Bissouma this season before he decides his future.
Arsenal had a £60m bid rejected on Friday with Brighton determined to keep the Ecuador international until the summer.
The Brighton midfielder has been told to stay away from the club until Febuary 1 after he made it clear on his social media that he wants to be able to pursue a move away before the Tuesday deadline.
Caicedo wrote on social media: “I am grateful to Mr. Bloom and Brighton for giving me the chance to come to the Premier League and I feel I have always done my best for them. I always play football with a smile and with heart.
“I am the youngest of 10 siblings from a poor upbringing in Santa Domingo in Ecuador. My dream always to be the most decorated player in the history of Ecuador.
“I am proud to be able to bring in a record transfer fee for Brighton which would allow them to reinvest it and help the club continue to be successful.
“The fans have taken me into their hearts and they will always be in my heart so I hope they can understand why I want to take up this magnificent opportunity.”
There have been rumours that Arsenal could increase their bid to £70m, while other reports have claimed that Brighton will only do business for £90m.
When asked by Jeff Stelling if Brighton are now better off keeping Caicedo despite his demands to leave, Sherwood told Sky Sports: “Sooner or later someone has got to make a stand. Tony Bloom might be that person to be able to do that and De Zerbi the manager, who has seen it happen with [Leandro] Trossard as well. The last thing you want as a manger is unhappy players at your club.
“When their heads are turned by big clubs, unfortunately you take the money, or you end up with nothing. Without the money or the player.
“So you’re better off taking the money. I think the kid needs to look at it very carefully, I think he needs to look at his mate [Yves] Bissouma who has gone to Tottenham. Everyone was lauding about this boy, where’s he going to go? Take his pick. Liverpool? He ended up at Tottenham and he’s not played.
“I’m not saying it’s entirely his fault but sometimes you can look a world-beater in a Brighton shirt [but] when they step up and play for a huge club it doesn’t happen.
