Boys Soak up Sun – and Wins – at ECNL Florida

Riverhounds Announce Six-Game Preseason Schedule

January 27, 2023 – United Soccer League Championship (USL)Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC News Release

The 2007 ECNL Boys ran the table in their three matches at the ECNL Florida Showcase.

Two weeks after the Riverhounds Development Academy’s girls took center stage in Central Florida, five Hounds boys teams were in the spotlight for the ECNL Florida and ECNL Regional League Florida events from Jan. 20-23.

Once again, the showcase was a great opportunity for Hounds players who are uncommitted to a college to shine, as close to 200 colleges had coaches in attendance, including Division I powerhouses such as Georgetown, Stanford, Syracuse, Maryland, Notre Dame; elite universities, including four Ivy League schools and two service academies; and top soccer programs from the lower divisions, such as recent Division III national champions Connecticut College, Tufts and Messiah.

The full lists of colleges in attendance can be viewed HERE for the ECNL event and HERE for the Regional League matches.

Tresz McLeod of the 2006 Boys team pulled down one of the top individual honors for the weekend by being chosen to participate in the Continental Tire ECNL National Selection Game, and he also produced one of the weekend’s top goals for the Hounds by rising high at the back post to get on the end of a good service left-footed service from John Krug.

On the team side, two of the five Hounds squads to make the trip went a perfect 3-0-0: the 2007 ECNL Boys and the 2004/05 Regional League Boys.

The 07s, the youngest group at the event, needed a Garrett Chandler game-winning goal to eke out a 3-2 victory in their opener against a good Virginia Development Academy side. The Hounds wouldn’t concede another goal on the weekend, thanks in large part to a penalty kick save by Andrew Schedlbauer in a 1-0 win over the Florida Kraze, and the team finished with a 2-0 win over the Utah Avalanche with a goal by Nathan Katari and the second goal of the weekend for Roman Agostoni.

The 04/05 RL side never got comfortable but got the job done, as all three of their wins came by 1-0 scores. Goals by Justin Lia off a corner kick, Anthony Vendetti from the penalty spot and Ryan Shantz in the run of play accounted for all the offense in wins over Connecticut FC, FC Stars (Mass.) and Orlando City SC.
