Arsenal boss Arteta ‘to blame’ for ‘inflammatory behaviour’ that led to Ramsdale getting kicked

Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale is pushed away from the Tottenham fans

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta “is the one who’s most to blame for the inflammatory behaviour” that led to Aaron Ramsdale getting attacked by a Tottenham fan in the north London derby.

A spectator jumped over the advertising hoardings from behind the goal as the players clashed at full-time in the Gunners’ 2-0 win. The fan was quickly restrained by stewards but not before aiming a kick at the England international.

Ramsdale told Sky Sports: “The Spurs fans were giving me some throughout the second half, I gave them some back, which to the few people I did do it to, was probably well-greeted, sportsmanship-like.

“Then a fan tried to jump over and give me a little punch on the back. That’s what happened and it’s a shame because it’s just a game of football at the end of the day.

“I think both sets of players tried to bring me away. Thankfully nothing actually happened too drastic. It’s a sour taste, but I’m sure we’ll enjoy it when we go back in the dressing room.”

Keys, who seems to criticise Arteta almost weekly, was at it again on Sunday with the former Sky Sports presenter claiming the Arsenal boss was to blame for the scenes at the end.

“Ramsdale has got form for winding supporters up and apparently has been having an exchange in the second half with those Tottenham fans, Ben White as well who was over there,” Keys said on beIN Sports.

“My fear is, and I’ve said it for a long time now, that the guy in the middle there [Arteta] is the one who’s most to blame for the inflammatory behaviour on the touchline that winds people up.

“If he’s not behaving himself then it’s likely that others in his team are not going to either.

“Who ultimately, then, becomes the master of the discipline? There isn’t anyone.”

The Football Association released a statement on the incident at the end of the north London derby – which Arsenal won thanks to an own goal from Hugo Lloris and a long-range effort from Martin Odegaard – with the governing body condemning the spectator.

A statement from the FA read: “We strongly condemn the incident involving a spectator that followed today’s Premier League fixture between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.

“This is wholly unacceptable behaviour and we will work together with the police, the relevant authorities and the clubs to ensure the appropriate action is taken.”
