Newcastle target ‘wants to join’ Arsenal as Edu calls for ‘patience’ amid Mudryk negotiations

Reported Newcastle target Ivan Fresneda during a match

Arsenal and Newcastle United are set to battle Juventus and Borussia Dortmund for the signing of Real Vallodolid wonderkid Ivan Fresneda, according to reports.

There appears to be a lot of interest in the 18-year-old right-back with plenty of rumours circulating about his future.

Writing on Twitter on Thursday evening, renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano said: “Interest growing around Ivan Fresneda. Valladolid RB’s attracting Newcastle, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus as called weeks ago but also more top European clubs have now joined the race.

“Born in 2004, Fresneda’s highly rated waiting for decision on his future.”

However, Arsenal are also reportedly interested in signing Fresneda.

The Gunners could be in for a new right-back should Cedric Soares leave the club.

Takehiro Tomiyasu is Benjamin White’s back-up in that position but has struggled to stay fit since joining from Bologna in 2021.

While this source has come out of nowhere, there has been some interesting news on Arsenal’s interest in the teenager.

Pucela News – an exclusive Real Vallodolid news outlet – believe Fresneda ‘wants to join Arsenal’.

This means a deal to sign Fresneda may be delayed until January 18.

Arsenal have already met with the player’s representatives with Pucela News saying his signing will be ‘next’ after Mudryk.

Not every report says the Gunners are leading the race to sign Fresneda, however.

The Vallodolid youngster reportedly has a £26million release clause, which would be a very respectable fee should he live up to his potential.

Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth recently said Fresneda would be ‘open’ to joining Newcastle.

The Spaniard was apparently ‘flattered’ to learn about the Magpies interest, with Eddie Howe seeking more depth in right-back.

Other than Kieran Trippier, Howe only has Javier Manquillo available in that position. Newcastle have also been linked with Leeds United’s Cody Drameh.

Another journalist, Spanish expert Fernando Kallas, has also claimed that a move to Newcastle is almost a ‘done deal’.

A report from Goal added Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid to the mix.

It was said that ‘several clubs in the Premier League, Serie A… among others’ are ‘closely following Fresneda’s developments’.

Vallodolid ‘know’ there are many suitors, but there have been ‘no firm…
