January 12, 2023 – National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL)Racing Louisville FC News Release

Racing Louisville FC executed a trade in the hours leading up to the 2023 NWSL Draft to acquire the NWSL playing rights to Paige Monaghan from NJ/NY Gotham FC, the clubs announced Thursday.

Racing sent its top pick – No. 4 overall – to Gotham FC in exchange for Monaghan, $150,000 in allocation money and an international roster slot for the 2023 season.

“We are thrilled to have Paige join us,” said Racing Louisville head coach Kim Björkegren. “She is a player who can play both winger and outside back. With her pace and league experience, we know that she will help us.”

Monaghan, 26, grew up in New Jersey and attended Butler University before Sky Blue FC – now known as Gotham FC – selected her 10th overall in the 2019 NWSL Draft. She appeared in all 22 of Gotham’s regular season games last year, scoring three goals.

“I am so humbled and excited for this next chapter of my career,” Monaghan said. “I cannot wait to continue to grow in Louisville and have the opportunity to work with the talented players and coaching staff of Racing Louisville. This is truly the next best step for me and I cannot wait to get…racing!”

At Gotham FC, Monaghan worked with Bev Yanez, a former assistant coach there who made an offseason move of her own to Louisville back in November.

“We are incredibly excited for Paige to join Racing,” said Yanez, now Racing’s top assistant. “Her experience, her ability and what she can provide both on and off the pitch are so valuable. I’m looking forward to working with her again and seeing her in lavender!”

Racing Louisville remains scheduled to make a pair of second-round picks, two third-round choices and a fourth-round selection in the 2023 NWSL Draft, which begins at 6 p.m. from the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.
