Dan Burn was asked by Eddie Howe to do a dressing room speech after his goal in Newcastle’s 2-0 win over Leicester in the Carabao Cup quarter-final, but danced instead.
It will be a night Burn won’t forget in a hurry as he scored his first goal for the club he supported as a boy, knee-sliding in front of the Gallowgate End as he helped the Magpies to their first semi-final in 18 years.
The Sky Sports cameras were permitted into the home dressing room at full-time, and showed Howe congratulating his players.
“Because the camera is there, I’m going to keep it short and sweet,” Howe was captured saying.
“Life and football for me are about moments. There are two moments I want you to reflect on today… the first one is the final whistle, through to the semi-final of a major cup competition – fantastic.
“The second is Dan Burn’s goal in front of the Gallowgate…”
It was then that Burn stood up and performed a dance to leave Howe and his teammates in stitches.
“I was actually asking him to give a speech and he stood up and danced,” the Magpies head coach joked afterwards. “He’s a great character and added real leadership and experience to the group. He’s a really well-liked member of the dressing room.
“When someone as popular as him has a moment like that, it’s nice for everyone to share it with him. He moves quite well for a big man!”
Howe revealed his delight at Burn opening the scoring on Tuesday night.
“Brilliant moment for him and the supporters,” Howe said.
“If you’re a betting man, there is no way you are ever putting money on Dan Burn’s right foot to open the scoring in any game. He missed a header I think he’ll be disappointed with but the goal was actually a thing of beauty.
“He won the ball high up the pitch, driven in with the ball and what a finish with his right foot from a tight angle. I’m delighted for him.
“He’s here with his family and obviously his story is well-known. It’s nights and moments like that, that make football what it is.”
