Leicester City have reportedly stretched ahead of their Premier League rivals in the race for Harry Souttar, with the Stoke City defender seemingly destined to make the step up to England’s top flight.

Souttar, 24, has attracted interest after dazzling for Australia at the World Cup in Qatar last year, where his heroic efforts at the back guided the Socceroos to the last-16 of the competition.

Graham Arnold’s side were sent home by eventual champions Argentina, but Souttar’s performances in Australia’s four World Cup matches has convinced onlookers that he is ready to play at the highest level.

And according to The Daily Record, Leicester City lead the race to sign the Scottish-born centre back. 

Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers is desperare for defensive reinforcements, with the east Midlands club lingering just above the relegation battle between a handful of Premier League clubs.

Summer signing Wout Faes has failed to convince at the back, with his two own goals at Anfield last week a lowpoint in the young Belgian’s career.

But Leicester will have to act fast if they’re to land Souttar, with the same outlet reporting that Rodgers has sent scouts to watch the 24-year-old on three occasions.
