Tottenham submit ‘verbal offer’ to sign under-fire Premier League star as interest ‘accelerates’

Tottenham target Trossard

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly submitted a ‘verbal offer’ to sign Brighton and Hove Albion and Belgium midfielder Leandro Trossard.

The Seagulls signed Trossard from Belgian side Genk before the 2019/20 campaign.

Since their promotion to the Premier League, Brighton have had a great track record when it comes to transfers.

Trossard is one example of an astute addition they have made as he has shone for the Premier League outfit over the past few seasons.

The midfielder was in superb form before the World Cup as he grabbed seven goals and two assists in 16 league outings.

The 28-year-old started once at the World Cup as Belgium were knocked out in the group stages.

Trossard is without a goal involvement in three games and he was an unused substitute last week as Brighton beat Everton 4-1.

Seagulls boss Roberto De Zerbi recently admitted that he “wants more” from Trossard.

“I want players to work for the team and the squad on the pitch. And Leandro knows very well my opinion and my idea. I spoke a lot of times with him,” De Zerbi told reporters.

“I like him as a player but I want more from him because he can play better, he can work harder, he can run more on the pitch, and I want players who give 100% always in every training session and every game. Without this characteristic or these things, they can’t play with me.”

This has come amid reports linking him with a move to a rival of Brighton.

Chelsea are said to be interested, which is understandable given that they are managed by Graham Potter.

But Football Insider are reporting that Tottenham have ‘submitted a verbal offer’ in an attempt to sign him.

The two Premier League clubs have ‘been in contact over a deal’.

Brighton are not interested though as the report adds that they have ‘knocked back the offer and have no intention of letting the 28-year-old go this month’.

A separate report from The Daily Mail adds that Spurs are ‘accelerating their interest’ in the midfielder.

They note that a deal ‘is not imminent’ and ‘any deal will take place later in the month’.

Trossard is out of contract in the summer but Brighton have the option to automatically extend his deal until 2024.

Spurs boss Antonio Conte wants more signings as he has insisted that “you can’t build a winning team in one year”.

“A winning team, you can’t build in one year. Two years; you have to change mentality, you have to change also many situations, many aspects to become a…
