Man Utd flop ‘wants’ to come back as Ten Hag ‘considers’ deal after ‘holding talks last summer’

Reported Man Utd target Memphis Depay during a warm-up

Man Utd are ‘considering’ the signing of Barcelona forward Memphis Depay, who is keen on a return to Old Trafford, according to reports.

Memphis joined the Red Devils from PSV back in 2014 – joining as one of the most promising young players in the world.

Many expected the Dutch forward to star in the Premier League; however, it was a bitterly disappointing spell.

He left after a year and a half, joining French club Lyon, where he thrived before a move to Barcelona.

Memphis enjoyed a strong start to life in Catalonia before picking up an injury and coming back to see more competition in his position.

Often named on the bench under Xavi, Memphis is expected to leave this year, with his contract expiring at the end of the season.

He has been linked with a return to Old Trafford with manager Erik ten Hag seeking attacking reinforcements.

Man Utd were expected to sign a new striker in the summer, however, Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit has sped up that search.

The Athletic correspondent Laurie Whitwell recently said Depay will ‘come under consideration’ this month and also confirmed that ‘talks were held last summer’ over a transfer.

Man Utd will also look at Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix, though the financial aspect of a potential deal is putting the club off.

It has been claimed by Spanish outlet Sport that Depay ‘would like to return’ to his former club.

The Red Devils are reluctant to spend money this month, though it is admitted that they are ‘looking for an attacker’.

Barcelona are ‘aspiring’ to receive a fee for the player, but know ‘it cannot be very large’ given the fact his contract expires in six months.

Man Utd are ‘looking’ for a player on loan and are yet to make a proposal for Memphis.

As well as a new forward, Man Utd are reportedly keen on bringing in a new central midfielder.

They signed Christian Eriksen and Casemiro last summer and pursued Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong for weeks on end.

Despite the player blatantly rejecting them, there have been some reports claiming that Man Utd are confident they can land the Dutch playmaker this month.

It was a very strange transfer saga, with the player eager to stay at Barca despite them actively trying to push him out.

Man Utd had a bid accepted but could not convince De Jong, whose desire to stay in Catalonia was influenced by the fact the club reportedly owe him around £17million in deferred wages.
