Everton manager Frank Lampard is dealing with “a lot of bad players” at Goodison Park, according to Manchester United legend Roy Keane.
The Toffees narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League last season and are in a similar predicament this term.
Lampard was able to rely on Richarlison for goals in 2021-22, but does not have that luxury this time around.
Neal Maupay was signed to replace the Brazilian striker but has barely made an impact since leaving Brighton.
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane is clearly not a big fan of the squad of players the Toffees have assembled.
Without naming names, Keane says “some” players are not “up to Premier League standard”.
“They have got a lot of bad players Everton, really bad players,” he told ITV on Friday evening.
“I look at that group of players, some of them I’m not sure are even up to Premier League standard, never mind Everton.”
Everton are currently 18th in the Premier League with three wins from their opening 18 games.
They will get a bit of respite from their dire top-flight campaign this weekend when they take on United at Old Trafford in the FA Cup.
The Toffees crashed out of the FA Cup in the quarter-finals last season, losing 4-0 at Crystal Palace; a result which led to Lampard saying his team lack “b***ocks”.
Lampard understands that his future at Goodison Park is under threat and reflected on the match against Palace in May that secured his side’s safety in the top flight.
“Maybe Crystal Palace at Goodison last year was as tough as it’s been because of the jeopardy of the game,” he told ITV prior to the match at Old Trafford. “That’s the situation of where I did come into and we have to keep working, there will always be pressure.
“Obviously there has been pressure – and talk and noise. That happens in the Premier League, it happens in football, it happens at Everton.
“Fortunately, I’m tough to that and I get on with my job. The job tonight is to play a really strong team and try to get through to the next round.
On Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who once again missed out against United, Lampard said: “Dominic felt some fatigue during the game against Brighton a bit and specifically the morning afterwards.
“We had a long chat with the medical team and if he started the game and played 90 minutes, we’ve learnt from history that that is where he has sometimes had issues. We would normally have started the game but not tonight.”
