Racing Louisville FC forward Emina Ekic suffered a fractured ankle in a Dec. 27 match in Australia while on loan with Melbourne City FC, the medical teams from both clubs confirmed.

Racing Louisville and Melbourne City are working together to formulate a treatment plan and the rehabilitation process for Ekic. The 23-year-old is expected to miss Racing’s preseason ahead of the 2023 campaign, which kicks off the weekend of March 25.

“I’m really disappointed that my time here in Australia has come to an end much sooner than I intended,” Ekic said. “I want to take the time to thank everyone who has been helping me through this whole process. It hasn’t been easy, and I’m super grateful. I’m excited to watch the girls keep crushing the rest of the season and watch Racing come together this preseason. As for me, it’s just a little bump in the road, and I’ll be back. I’m excited to make my return home.”

“We are obviously disappointed for Emina. She was playing great football in Australia, and I feel for her,” Racing head coach Kim Björkegren said. “We will do everything we can to support Emina’s recovery process, and I know she will work hard to come back even stronger.”

Ekic, a Louisville native entering her third year with Racing, was off to a hot start to her three-month loan spell with Melbourne City, scoring four goals in five A-League Women appearances. The former University of Louisville star rang up three goals and an assist in 25 appearances for Racing across all competitions in 2022.

Racing’s preseason begins January 23 with players reporting to Louisville.
