Loris Karius’ Newcastle future in doubt just FOUR months on from joining the Magpies after Martin Dubravka is recalled from loan spell at Manchester United and fit again Karl Darlow also weighing up January options

  • Loris Karius joined Newcastle United on an emergency deal back in September
  • But the former Liverpool goalkeeper’s contract is up at the end of January
  • He has yet to make his debut for Eddie Howe’s side since joining
  • Karius is now set to drop to fourth choice keeper at the Magpies

Loris Karius could be set for a Newcastle United exit just four months after joining the club as they weigh up their goalkeeping options.

The former Liverpool goalkeeper joined Eddie Howe’s side on a short term deal back in September, and his contract is due to expire at the end of January.

The 29-year-old has been acting as a back-up to No 1 keeper Nick Pope who has been an important member of a team that has shot up the Premier League table this term and is battling to secure a Champions League place sitting third in the table.

However, Pope’s good form means the German has still yet to make his debut for Newcastle and now his future beyond this month is looking doubtful.

Howe still appears uncertain who he wants to act as understudy behind Pope beyond the end of the month.

Martin Dubravka has been recalled from a disappointing loan spell at Manchester United, while Karl Darlow is also still on the books at St James’ Park having returned recently from an ankle injury.

While the situation is still ongoing, Karius could still remain at the club but it will all depend on the futures of Dubravka and Darlow and any pending moves the duo could make during the window.

Karius is likely to be fourth choice if all the keepers remain at the club, with Dubravka the previous No 1 and Darlow his former understudy.

Darlow was the back-up keeper this term but his injury saw Howe move for Karius as emergency cover.
