Sources ‘very close to’ midfielder claim Liverpool are set to swoop; Newcastle ‘main suspects’ for Fernandez bid

Liverpool target Enzo Fernandez carries an award

Liverpool are likely to make a move for Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat soon as Newcastle United are suspected of the anonymous bid for Enzo Fernandez, according to reports.

The Reds are looking to bring in a new midfielder over the next couple of transfer windows after Jurgen Klopp realised in the summer that he needed to strengthen that area of his team.

It had looked like Liverpool were done with their summer transfer business after Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay arrived.

However, injuries to Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara, coupled with a run of poor form in August, saw Klopp move on transfer deadline day for Juventus midfielder Arthur on a season-long loan deal.

Unfortunately for the Reds, Arthur was quickly ruled out with a knee injury with the Brazilian unlikely to come into Klopp’s long-term thinking to solve his midfield issues.

Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham has been linked with a move to Anfield for a while now and it was thought that Liverpool were leading the race to sign the England international.

A recent report claimed that Spanish giants Real Madrid ‘believe they’ve won’ the race to sign Bellingham and other targets have now emerged.

Two stars of the World Cup in Qatar have been mooted in recent weeks with Morocco midfielder Amrabat and Argentina midfielder Fernandez standing out.

Italian publication Corriere Fiorentino (via Sport Witness) claim that their sources ‘very close to’ Amrabat insist that Premier League side Liverpool ‘could soon’ make an offer for the 26-year-old.

Fiorentina are ‘preparing’ themselves for January bids for Amrabat after his brilliant performances at the World Cup and the report adds that he is getting ‘a lot of attention’.

Liverpool are one of the clubs interested in his services and they are weighing up an offer ‘not far from €40m’ for the Moroccan with that offer coming close to the Serie A side’s valuation.

A report earlier this week insisted that a €100m for Benfica’s Fernandez was not from Liverpool but Portuguese newspaper A Bola now claim it could be from Newcastle.

The publication have them down as the ‘main suspects’ for making the bid, due to their rich new owners, but Benfica turned down the offer.

Benfica are hoping to hang onto Fernandez until at least the summer but if they do lose him then they will only accept bids of €120m, which match his release clause.
