CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia’s Andreas Ueland was selected in the third round of the 2023 MLS SuperDraft by the New England Revolution with the 68th overall pick.
Throughout George Gelnovatch’s 27-year tenure, UVA has produced 31 MLS SuperDraft picks since its inception in 2000. With Ueland’s selection, he becomes the ninth Cavalier taken in the MLS SuperDraft since 2020. Virginia has had at least one player selected in four of the last six drafts.
Ueland is just the latest Cavalier to join the ranks of the Revolution. On the field, he will join former teammate, Henry Kessler, who played alongside Ueland during Virginia’s run to the College Cup final in 2019. Former Cavalier Jake Rozhansky currently plays for New England Revolution II. New England is managed by former Virginia head coach, Bruce Arena, who led the Cavaliers to five NCAA titles in his 18-year tenure. Three more former Cavaliers are also on staff in New England including Richie Williams (Assistant Coach), Curt Onalfo (Technical Director), Chris Tierney (Director of Operations) and Clint Peay who serves as the head coach of New England Revolution II. Ueland becomes the fifth Cavalier to be selected by the Revolution in the history of the MLS SuperDraft.

A native of Byrne, Norway, Ueland put forward his best season in his final campaign as a Cavalier in 2022. As a co-captain and defensive leader, he was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year after leading the Cavaliers to eight shutout performances, fourth-most in the conference. He was also named First Team All-Region by the United Soccer Coaches and became the second-ever Cavalier to earn First Team Scholar All-American honors.
It was often Ueland at the center of Virginia’s crucial moments of the 2022 season. He recorded a pair of goals on the season that both served as equalizers, but his signature moment came on the road at No. 3 Syracuse (Sept. 24). With the game scoreless after 70 minutes of play, it was a sliding tackle executed to perfection by Ueland that kept what may have been the winning goal for Syracuse out of the net. Minutes later, Leo Afonso netted the winner for Virginia.
