Cristiano Ronaldo ‘should’ sign for Lionel Messi’s rivals as ex-Man Utd star ‘was in talks’ over transfer

Ronaldo told to join French club

Former Man Utd attacker Cristiano Ronaldo has been told that he “should” have signed for Ligue 1 side Marseille to renew his rivalry with Lionel Messi.

Ronaldo is searching for a new club after he was let go by Man Utd before the World Cup started last month.

This came after the player’s controversial interview with Piers Morgan aired. During this drawn-out exchange, Ronaldo hit out at Erik ten Hag, Ralf Rangnick and the Glazer family.

The 37-year-old has been out of form this season as he was seemingly impacted by missing most of pre-season.

Ronaldo subsequently struggled at the World Cup for Portugal as his only goal for the European side came via a penalty.

Portugal made it through the group stages even though they were beaten 2-1 by South Korea in their final game.

The ex-Man Utd attacker was unhappy about being subbed off in that game and he then started their two knockout ties on the bench as they exited the competition in the quarter-finals.

Ronaldo is now back at Real Madrid to use their facilities to train before he secures his next move.

Back in August, Ligue 1 outfit Marseille were encouraged to “jump at the chance” to sign Ronaldo.

Now Basile Boli – an ambassador for the French club – has suggested that Ronaldo “should have” joined Marseille.

“Cristiano Ronaldo was in talks with Olympique [Marseille], I think he should have come,” Boli told NW Sport (via Le Figaro).

“He is a talented player, even if he is a bit old, I think that in the French championship he still has something to give.

“We saw that, for Messi, it didn’t work out in the first year and then in the second year he proved he was number one.”

While Ronaldo and Portugal exited the World Cup in the quarter-finals, Lionel Messi and Argentina went all the way to win the competition for the third time.

The PSG superstar was sensational in Qatar as he grabbed seven goals and three assists.

TalkSPORT presenter Andy Goldstein thinks Messi has achieved something that Ronaldo never will.

“It doesn’t matter what Ronaldo does now for the rest of his career, Messi gets that World Cup winners’ medal which he won’t get.”

Darren Bent replied: “That’s it, he’s fuming.

“Someone who’s a serial winner like Ronaldo, I could understand why that would bother him, Messi winning that World…
