Rondon departs Everton by mutual consent as Romano names potential January upgrade

Salomon Rondon is sent-off as Everton lose to Brentford.

Salomon Rondon left Everton by mutual consent yesterday after an underwhelming 16-month spell at Goodison Park.

This has left Blues boss Frank Lampard with only two out-and-out strikers at the club: The ever-injured Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Neal Maupay, who has struggled to find form this season.

The Toffees are now reportedly looking at a number of striker options to sign in the January window, as they aim to avoid another relegation scare.

Rondon was one of the first signings during the dismal reign of Rafael Benitez, joining on a free transfer from Chinese club Dalian Professional in August 2021.

Despite being brought in purely as a backup option to Calvert-Lewin, the Venezuelan striker ended up playing a lot more frequently than expected after injuries limited DCL’s game time, an issue which is still plaguing the Toffees.

Overall, Rondon made 33 appearances for Everton but scored just three goals, with his poor form ultimately leading to Lampard’s decision to terminate the 33-year-old’s contract yesterday.

Considering Everton have scored the second-least amount of goals in the Premier League this season and currently sit just one point above the relegation zone, the Toffees are desperate to bring in more forward options to turn their season around.

Lampard will be especially keen to get some attacking quality through the door, as he is currently favourite to be the next Premier League manager to be sacked.

Everton eye striker options as they look to stave off relegation threat

Everton’s hunt for a new forward was confirmed by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who named one of the strikers the Toffees are interested in.

Earlier today, he said: “Everton are now exploring the strikers market after terminating S. Rondon’s contract.

“Talks will take place in the next days and weeks, they were among four clubs interested in Matheus Cunha.”

Indeed, Matheus Cunha is one of the big names linked to Everton in recent days.

The Brazilian attacker looks set to leave Atletico Madrid after struggling for form since joining the Spanish giants. Cunha joined Atletico in the summer of 2021 for €25million with an additional €5m in add-ons.

This season, Cunha is yet to score in 17 appearances across all competitions and has started just two La Liga games under Diego Simeone.

The 23-year-old is now reportedly close to a move to the Premier League, with Everton, Aston Villa and Wolves all vying for his signature, according to The Athletic.
