Keane names ‘favourites’ for World Cup final as France star clams Mbappe is better than Messi

Roy Keane speaks about Lionel Messi

Roy Keane thinks Argentina are “slight favourites” to beat France in the World Cup final on Sunday because of their support and Lionel Messi.

France overcame a tough match against Morocco in their semi-final with goals from Theo Hernandez and Randal Kolo Muani securing their progress to the final.

Argentina, meanwhile, beat Croatia comfortably in their semi with Messi running the show as Lionel Scaloni’s side won 3-0 ahead of Sunday’s showpiece event.

And former Manchester United midfielder Keane is looking forward to a brilliant game of football at the Lusail Stadium with France able to “get the job done” while Argentina have the advantage of their incredible fans and Messi.

“It’s intriguing, it’s a great final and one to really look forward to,” Keane told ITV Football.

“You look at France against Morocco and England and you think they’re not great, but they get the job done. They’ve conceded one goal in those two games and that was a penalty.

“But Argentina, with all the support behind them, the energy of the team and of course Lionel Messi, you would have to say they are slight favourites.

“We saw glimpses of peak Messi [in the semi-final win over Croatia]. He’s done it for years and years. The guy is fantastic and I love watching him. You know what, I hope they win it, even if it’s just for him.”

Dark horses Morocco pinned France back on numerous occasions earlier in the week and Keane reckons Argentina will fancy their chances against Didier Deschamps’ midfield.

Keane added: “I think Argentina will be encouraged by how many chances Morocco got and how easy it was to get through the France midfield.

“But look, Sunday is a different game. The intensity will be different. France are the World champions so they will be confident and they’re attacking players can certainly hurt Argentina.

“There will be respect there but both teams will fancy their chances. That’s why it’s set up for a brilliant game.”

Aurelien Tchouameni has backed his France team-mate Kylian Mbappe to show the world that he is better than Messi when the two superstars collide on Sunday in Qatar.

“For me it’s Kylian,” Tchouameni said when asked whether Mbappe or Messi is better. “For me it’s Mbappe and I want him to prove that in the next game.”
