Croatia Boss Hopeful Luka Modric Plays On For Euro 2024

Croatia Boss Hopeful Luka Modric Plays On For Euro 2024

Luka Modric’s international future remains unknown with Croatia head coach Zlatko Dalic stating it would be a “pity” if he retired.

Modric and Croatia’s World Cup dream ended with a 3-0 semi-final humbling by Argentina on Tuesday, with the side now destined for a third-place playoff with Morocco.

That game may be 37-year-old Modric’s last in the red and white checkers, following a decorated international career with 161 caps, including a World Cup final, and 23 goals.

Modric has made no decision on his playing future internationally ahead of the Morocco clash, with Euro 2024, approximately 18 months away.

“He was very disappointed yesterday, the defeat and the match were hard on him,” Dalic told reporters.

“It’s logical that he feels that way (considering retirement), it was really hard for him.

“I hope he stays in the national team. Of course, he will decide about it himself. We have a game on Saturday and well talk after that. It will be difficult for me if Modric says goodbye.”

Dalic was full of praise for the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner, who has made more than 300 appearances for Real Madrid.

“If Luka says goodbye to the national team, it will be a pity and regret for all the fans around the world,” Dalic said.

“It will be difficult for me too if he decides otherwise, but the whole world respects Modric. It would be nice if he continued.”
