Peter Stroud Announced as MAC Hermann Trophy Finalist

DURHAM – Duke midfielder Peter Stroud has been recognized as a MAC Hermann Trophy finalist, the United Soccer Coaches and Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) announced today. Stroud becomes the first Duke finalist for the coveted individual honor since Andrew Wenger in 2011, who went on to win the award.

The finalists alongside Stroud are Levonte Johnson from Syracuse and Duncan McGuire from Creighton.

The MAC Hermann Trophy is the top individual honor in NCAA Division I soccer and has been awarded annually since 1967. The 2022 MAC Hermann Trophy banquet is held at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on Jan. 6, 2023 to formally announce this year’s winners. Joining Stroud in St. Louis is Duke women’s soccer standout Michelle Cooper, after the sophomore was named a women’s finalist last week. Duke becomes the first school to have a finalist from both the men’s and women’s team since Stanford did so in 2017.

Stroud, the top player in the country in both of TopDrawerSoccer’s preseason and midseason Top 100, provided a steady presence in Duke’s midfield all season long. He finished the 2022 season tied for second-most points on the team and setting a new career-high for assists in a regular season with five. The Chester, N.J., native was named All-America First Team and became the first player in ACC history to win back-to-back ACC Midfield of the Year honors while also being named First Team All-ACC and All-South Region First Team for the second consecutive season.

Named to the 2022 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List in the preseason, Stroud was one of five players from the preseason watch list to be named a semifinalist and is the only finalist from the preseason watch list. An All-America First Team selection this season, he is one of 11 All-Americans in 2022 that had earned previous All-America recognition from United Soccer Coaches, after being named to the All-America Third Team following the 2021 season.

Stroud played 88 minutes or more in 17 of Duke’s 19 matches in 2022 and recorded his 50th career start, in his 51st appearance, in Duke’s match against Pittsburgh this season. He helped lead the Blue Devils to their first undefeated…
