Manchester United ‘will make an enquiry about Goncalo Ramos in January’ as they seek a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo… but Erik ten Hag ‘has been told a striker may NOT arrive’ in the transfer window due to budget constraints

  • Manchester United are reportedly interested in a move for Goncalo Ramos
  • Ramos scored a hat-trick for Portugal in their last-16 clash against Switzerland
  • Erik ten Hag has been told it’s not certain they will get a striker in January

Goncalo Ramos could be set to replace Cristiano Ronaldo once again, with Manchester United reportedly interested in signing the Portuguese striker from Benfica.

ESPN have reported that United are to make an enquiry about the availability of Ramos during the January transfer window, though it could be difficult to get the signing done as soon as then due to budget constraints.

It would be the second time Ramos has replaced the former United star, after stepping in for the Portuguese icon during the knock-out phase of the World Cup.

United are looking for a new striker after Ronaldo succeeded in getting his contract terminated at the club after his controversial interview with Piers Morgan.

Ronaldo is a free agent after his comments which included he felt ‘betrayed’ by United and ‘didn’t respect’ manager Erik ten Hag.

Ramos is among a number of players being eyed up by those at Old Trafford, including Cody Gakpo, Rafael Leao and Joao Felix.

The report by ESPN though adds that Ten Hag has been told that January might not be an ideal time to bring in new players due to budget constraints on the back of the Covid-19 pandemic, and a higher than expected outlay on transfers last summer.

The Red Devils spent over £200million on Antony, Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez and Tyrrell Malacia in the last transfer window.

Ronaldo only scored one goal during the World Cup and was replaced by Ramos in their matches with Switzerland and Morocco.
