The funny thing about AFCON 2023 is it has a misleading name. The tournament will actually take place throughout January 2024 instead.

Ivory Coast will be the host nation.

The decision was made to move the tournament due to weather issues. June and July are known as Ivory Coast’s rainy seasons, and CAF president Patrice Motsepe did not want to run the risk of games being called off because of this.

“We cannot take the risk. January is not the ideal time because of the European clubs, but it is the only choice we have,” he said.

So far, only hosts Ivory Coast are confirmed participants for AFCON 2023.

Remaining qualification matches will take place in the March and September international breaks in 2023, with 23 teams vying for a place in the finals.

Kenya and Zimbabwe have been disqualified after their respective national governments attempted to interfere with their sporting federations. They have since been reinstated to FIFA but not in time to participate in the qualification stages for AFCON 2023.
