Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is open to becoming England manager if Gareth Southgate walks from his position, according to reports.
Harry Kane scored a penalty and missed a second as a 2-1 loss to Les Bleus prevented England reaching successive World Cup semi-finals for the first time in their history.
Southgate has said he wants time to reflect on the tournament before deciding if he will continue on, with his contract running to after Euro 2024.
And England supporters have already speculated as to who could take over from Southgate if the former Middlesbrough boss was to hand in his resignation, with free agent Tuchel coming up a lot.
The Sun claims that Tuchel ‘wants the England job’ if Southgate decides he wants to walk away with the former Chelsea boss back in Germany waiting for the right opportunity.
It is understood Tuchel ‘would love to make a swift return to England as boss of the Three Lions’ after seeing ‘first-hand all the young talent at the country’s disposal’.
The report adds that the Football Association are still ‘desperate’ to see Southgate stay on as manager and that they ‘would prefer to appoint a candidate from the British Isles’ if he did leave.
Chelsea’s Graham Potter, Leicester City’s Brendan Rodgers and Newcastle United’s Eddie Howe ‘would all be in the frame’ if Southgate decided he needed a new challenge.
Speaking about his future after France beat England, Southgate told reporters: “When I’ve been through the past few tournaments my emotions have been difficult to really think through properly in those following few weeks.
“It took so much energy out of you and you have so much going through your mind.
“I want to make the right decision either way because it has to be the right one to go again, or the right one not to go again and I don’t think tonight is the time to make a decision like that.
“Neither are the next few days really.”
When put to him that the future looks bright for England, Southgate added: “Yeah, look, I’ve found large parts of the last 18 months difficult.
“For everything that I’ve loved about the last few weeks, I still have how things have been for 18 months.
“What’s been said and what’s been written, the night at Wolves.
“There’s lots of things in my head that’s really conflicted at the moment, so what I want to make sure, if it’s the right thing to say, is that I’ve definitely got the energy to do that.
