Keane tells Liverpool midfielder Henderson to be ‘more generous’ as he jokes over breakfast

Roy Keane speaks about Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson

Roy Keane has joked that Liverpool and England midfielder Jordan Henderson needs to be “more generous” after the Manchester United legend once paid for his breakfast.

Henderson was part of the England side that lost 2-1 to France on Saturday as the Three Lions exited the World Cup at the quarter-final stage.

The 32-year-old knows the high and lows of playing for England better than most given this World Cup was his sixth major tournament.

Part of the squad that crashed out in the group stage of the 2014 World Cup, the Liverpool captain was also part of the run to the semi-finals in Russia four years later and last year’s European Championship runners-up finish.

Henderson has had his detractors while playing for the Three Lions but Man Utd legend Keane has always been impressed by the Liverpool midfielder’s contributions.

“I suppose so [he’s been doubted] probably because he’s not great on the eye, you think of the way he plays,” Keane said on ITV Sport. “He’s won battles throughout his career and his dad makes a great point – it almost felt at Sunderland he loved the game.

“The stuff on the pitch, off the pitch, he has done amazing stuff and his family must be proud of him. I’ve always liked Jordan, he’s pretty humble.

“Saying that, I met him a few months ago for breakfast and I had to pay for it. Holding that against him a little bit. He should be a bit more generous.”

On England’s exit from the World Cup, Keane added: “Just a reminder top level sport is brutal. Absolutely brutal. I thought England were outstanding, the better team but you have to give France credit, they know how to win the game, they weren’t at their best but they found a way. Really tough on England.”

And fellow ITV Sport pundit Gary Neville agreed with Keane in his assessment: “Absolutely gutted for Harry Kane, gutted for the lads, they played so well in that second-half.

“It was a 50/50 game they just came the wrong side of, you wouldn’t have had anyone else to take that penalty, he would’ve been England’s greatest ever goalscorer.

“The heartbreak, they’ve had to work so hard, they’ve now got to wait four years. Look this is no disgrace, England have lost pretty badly in tournaments but they played pretty well…
