Roy Keane says he had to fly home from the World Cup as his fellow pundits were “getting on my nerves”.
Keane has been on pundity duty for ITV with the likes of Graeme Souness, Ian Wright and Joe Cole.
And their company apparently became too much for the Manchester United legend, who flew home for a few days with his “tolerance levels” at breaking point.
In conversation with Gary Neville and Micah Richards for SkyBet Keane said the World Cup experience had been “OK” before Neville explained: “To be fair Roy went home for four or five days as well actually. He went back.”
Keane admitted: “I had a break. I needed a break, just my tolerance levels. Yeah, people get on my nerves.”
Asked by Richards to name names, Keane said: “How long have we got? Fellow pundits.”
“I can see when the tank’s filling up,” Neville claimed. “It’s like one of those challenges on I’m A Celebrity with Roy, you know when you can see the tank is rising until you have to get out of there.”
Graeme Souness may well have been one colleague Keane felt he required a break from.
Keane and Souness engaged in a fiery debate over the awarding of Argentina’s penalty in their opening group game against Saudi Arabia.
Messi scored his first goal of the tournament from the spot, but Keane was left raging with Souness’ suggestion that the referee was right to award the penalty.
“No, no, no. All this will do is encourage diving. He’s dragging him down, he’s dragging him down!” Keane said.
“Roy, you’re not listening to what Laura [Woods] is saying. The directive from referees…”
After a couple of minutes of further bickering, the argument reached boiling point.
“I’ve heard you say it 10 times,” Souness said as Keane reiterated it wasn’t a penalty. “Let someone else speak. You’ll learn a lot more if you listen rather than talk all the time.”
“Thank you for your time, no problem,” Keane replied.
