Robert Lewandowski has revealed what he whispered in Lionel Messi’s ear at the end of the clash between Poland and Argentina.
Messi’s side overcame Lewandowski’s 2-0 on Wednesday in a game which saw both teams progressing to the last 16 of the World Cup.
Messi saw a penalty saved by Wojciech Szczesny early on but was again impressive as goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Julian Alvarez were enough to see them top Group C.
But things got a little heated between the Messi and Lewandowski at one point as Messi didn’t take kindly to Lewandowski pulling his shirt to prevent an Argentina attack.
On that incident, Lewandowski told BILD: “That was very strange, yes: I was in the centre of the pitch defending, but I knew I had to help the team.”
Messi ignored the Poland talisman’s offer of a handshake after the free-kick, but refused to go into detail after the game.
He told reporters: “Lewandowski? They taught me that everything that happens on the pitch stays on the pitch, as well as in the locker room.
“Things that we say to each other in private will never come out of me.”
But the duo appeared to have made up by the end of the game, or certainly Lewandowski thought they had, as they engaged in a bit of “fun” at the final whistle.
“Messi played a brilliant game and when the match was over, I immediately went to congratulate him!” Lewandowski said.
Asked what he whispered in Messi’s ear, Lewandowski said: “We talked a bit and it was fun. I told Messi that he was playing more defensively than usual, but sometimes that’s what the team needs.”
Ah yes, what “fun” they had.
Messi will lead Argentina against Australia in the last 16 on Saturday, in what will be the Paris Saint-Germain star’s 1000th competitive game for club and country.
Poland meanwhile are set to take on reigning champions France on Sunday, with the winner of that game set to take on England or Senegal in the quarter-final.
