Flick Wants to Remain Germany Boss Despite Exit, Calls for Change

Hansi Flick wants to continue as Germany manager despite the side’s disappointing group stage World Cup exit.

Germany finished third in their group which was topped by Japan who beat Spain 2-1 on Thursday, while Dienationalmannschaft beat Costa Rica 4-2.

The result means that the four-time world champions have failed to reach the knockout stage at the past two World Cups.

Flick, 57, had taken over as national team boss in May 2021 to replace Joachim Low after Euro 2020, but hasn’t started in the role as he wouldve hoped.

“From my side, yes (I’d like to continue), I enjoy it,” Flick told ARD. We have a good team, good players coming up. But it’s not up to me.”

Flick added: “My disappointment is huge, we have to get over it first.”

The German boss quickly turned his attention to fixing the national team’s issues from a longer term view.

“We do have players who play at top clubs, we do have the qualities,” Flick said.

“I believe that for the future of German football we need to do things differently in training. For years we talk about new goalkeepers or new wing-backs, but what was always very good in German football was that we were able to defend well.

“We need the basics. Even though Spain lost against Japan, they are very good in defence and they focus on training the youngsters to those tactics.

“For the future, even for the next 10 years, this is vital.”
