Wayne Rooney responds to 'strange' Cristiano Ronaldo comments in Piers Morgan interview

Wayne Rooney has spoken publicly for the first time after being called out by Cristiano Ronaldo during his explosive interview with Piers Morgan.

Rooney recently urged former teammate Ronaldo to ‘get his head down’ in order to remain an ‘asset’ to Manchester United down the final stretch of his playing career.

But the 37-year-old did not take kindly to Rooney’s comments, questioning his criticisms and bizarrely insisting that he is better looking than the D.C. United manager.

Speaking at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai, Rooney was sympathetic about Ronaldo’s situation, but said that the interview was a ‘strange’ one regardless.

“Well, listen, Cristiano Ronaldo’s a fantastic player and, as I’ve said before, he and [Lionel] Messi are the two best players probably to play the game. And, again, it’s not a criticism. What I’ve said is age comes to all of us, and Cristiano is obviously feeling now that he’s finally had to deal with that,” Rooney said.

“Obviously, he’s done an interview, and it’s gone global, and it’s strange, some of the comments are strange. But I’m sure Manchester United will deal with it once they’ve seen the full interview, and they will take whatever action they need to take.”
