Season Ends in NCAA First Round for Cardinals

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The 2022 season came to a close for the University of Louisville men’s soccer team on Thursday night with a 2-1 double overtime loss to Western Michigan at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.

Louisville ends the season at 9-6-3 overall with the program’s 14th NCAA Tournament appearance and third in John Michael Hayden‘s four seasons.

Thursday’s match played to a defense stalemate through the first 45 minutes, but not without both teams having scoring opportunities.

Macoumba Ba had the opening shot of the match blocked just 41 seconds in and then got an early chance from in close that was shot over the crossbar in the 15th minute.

Western Michigan (15-2-2) held a stout advantage in shots in the first half, leading 11-4 in the shot column. However, Ryan Troutman and the Louisville defense stood tall, with Troutman claiming four saves.

The Broncos were in control again early in the second half and finally broke the scoreless match with a goal in the 60th minute.

The Cardinals had two great chances in the 73rd minute with Sander Roed and Aboubacar Camara getting off shots from in close, but the WMU keeper kept both attempts out of the net.

Josh Jones had a shot attempt saved in the 83rd minute and the rebound caromed to the Cardinals who had a cross deflect off a Western Michigan hand inside the box. The handball resulted in a penalty attempt for the Cards and Camara slotted the shot home to level the match at one.

The match went to overtime and WMU moved back in front with a goal less than three minutes in.

Louisville had four chances over the two overtime periods, but none beat the keeper.

Western Michigan held a 20-17 advantage in shots on the night and a 14-3 edge in corner kick.

Troutman made six saves on the night for the Cardinals.
