No. 6 Terps Fall To Indiana In B1G Semifinals, 2-1

COLLEGE PARK, MD — No. 6 Maryland, the top seed in the Big Ten Tournament, came up short against fourth-seeded Indiana in the semifinal round Wednesday night at Ludwig Field. It was the Terps’ first loss against a Big Ten opponent all season. 

Maryland will now head into NCAA Tournament Play. Their playoff path will be unveiled during a selection show on NCAA.com on Monday, Nov. 14 at 1 pm. 

The Hoosiers got a pair of goals in the final 11 minutes of the first half to put themselves soundly ahead. Colin Griffith got one goal back for the Terps in the 61st minute, but the Terps could not find the equalizer during the final third of play, despite several chances. 

Griffith, a true freshman, scored Maryland’s lone goal for the second consecutive game, with the first coming in the Terps’ 1-0 quarterfinal win over Northwestern on Friday. 

The Terps are now 10-3-5 overall while Indiana improved to 10-3-6.

Breaking Down The Action

• Stefan Copetti gave the Terps an early opportunity with a shot that was fired just wide of the goal, but that was the only real chance for either side through the first 30 minutes of action.
• The Hoosiers broke the deadlock in the 35th minute as Samuel Sarver capitalized off a nice cross from Ryan Wittenbrink. 
• In the 40th minute, the Terps came up with a couple of impressive team saves, but Indiana doubled its lead off the ensuing corner kick. 
• Griffith cut the deficit in half with a goal in the 61st minute. Griffith came away with the ball in a cluster just outside the box and flashed some pretty footwork for a nice finish. 
• The Terps were inches away from tying the game a few minutes later as Chris Rindov put up a header off a corner kick that bounced off the crossbar. 
• The Terps had a flurry off chances in the 79th minute as Griffith had a shot in close range blocked and Copetti’s header off the rebound hit the crossbar.
• Maryland was unable to come up with the tying goal in the closing minutes. The Terps outshot the Hoosiers 7-0 in the final half.
