The 2022 edition of the World Cup is upon us – and it’s crunch time for the 32 countries competing as they name their 26-player squads for the tournament.

Preliminary squads will now be whittled down to the real deal, with a number of high-profile players set to miss the tournament through injury – a consequence of the World Cup being staged during the middle of the domestic season.

FIFA rules stipulate that teams can replace injured players ruled out of the tournament up to 24 hours before their first game, but anything after that will simply be a headache for each and every manager.
