SEATTLE, WA. – OL Reign has re-signed defender Sam Hiatt through the 2024 NWSL season, the club announced today. Per league and club policy, the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“I am so proud to continue representing and playing for my home state team,” said Hiatt. “Winning the Shield at Lumen was a dream come true, but I know we have bigger goals in mind, so I can’t wait to return next season and contribute to our success. It’s always an honor and a privilege to play for the Reign.”

In her third season with OL Reign, Hiatt started in all 19 games played for a total of 1,710 minutes this season, tied for the second-most minutes played on the team with former Stanford teammate Alana Cook. The 24-year-old led the Reign in clearances with 81, finishing the season ranked 10th in the league. Additionally, Hiatt finished third on the team in successful passes (628) and registered 58 duels won, the third-most among OL Reign defenders.

Since being selected by OL Reign as the 33rd overall pick in the 2020 NWSL Draft, Hiatt has started in all 28 regular season games played and recorded 997 successful passes, 117 clearances, 86 duels won, 35 interceptions, and 29 blocks. The Stanford graduate’s 29 blocks are ninth in the league among all defenders since 2020.

The Newcastle native made her debut with the Reign during the 2020 NWSL Fall Series and then started in nine regular season games during the 2021 regular season. In the 2022 NWSL Challenge Cup, the defender scored her first OL Reign goal in a 3-1 win against San Diego Wave FC.

“Sam has a really bright future as a professional, and we’re really excited to be re-signing her,” said head coach Laura Harvey. “She stepped into a starting role this season and was an integral part of the success of our backline. We’re looking forward to watching her develop even further with the team.”
