Dan Burn has called criticism of Newcastle’s spending this season ‘unfair’ and ‘lazy’, claiming that ‘the club has not bought its way to fourth place.’

The northumberland side were one of the biggest spenders during the summer transfer window, paying out approximately £123m to bring in a raft of new players that included Alexander Isak, Nick Pope and Sven Botman. 

Last month, director of football Dan Ashworth claimed that Newcastle have ‘no ceiling’ when it comes to their ambitions, but that remark was criticised by some around the league.

One of those critics included Jurgen Klopp, who sarcastically implied the Geordies had ‘no ceiling’ when it came to their finances.

Newcastle currently sit in fourth place in the Premier League after an epic start to the season that has seen them lose just one game.

But speaking to the i Paper boyhood fan, Burn, admitted such criticism ‘wasn’t doing his side proper justice.’

‘We tend not to listen to a lot of what has been said, we try to keep it in house,’ the centre-back said. 

‘But when things like that are said it is frustrating because a lot of the lads who are performing really well were here before the takeover and I think it’s a little bit lazy when they do say that.
