GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – With both semifinal matchups needing penalty kicks, top-seeded North Carolina and No. 2 seed Florida State are moving on to the 2022 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Championship final this Sunday at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina.

 

After the Tar Heels and No. 5 seed Duke were scoreless through 110 minutes, UNC edged the Blue Devils in penalty kicks, 7-6. In the nightcap, the Seminoles and No. 3 seed Notre Dame were even at 3-3 through the second overtime period. FSU advanced to the title match with a 4-2 difference in penalty kicks.

 

Tickets for the final of the 2022 ACC Championship are on sale now and can be purchased at theacc.co/22wsoctix. Single-day adult general admission tickets are $10. One ticket is good for entry into both semifinal games, but no reentry is allowed.

 

Admission is free for youth ages 18 and under, as well as students of ACC institutions.

 

No. 1 North Carolina 0, No. 5 Duke 0 (UNC advances 7-6 in PKs)

The Tar Heels had a player advantage for 27:52 after Duke’s Maggie Graham was issued a red card with 0:44 seconds remaining in the first half. UNC took nine shots and five corner kicks with the advantage but were stymied by the Blue Devils’ defense that dropped back into a 4-4-1 formation.

The teams went back to even strength in the 73rd minute when UNC midfielder Talia Dellaperuta was issued her second yellow card and disqualified for the remainder of the match. The two teams played 10-on-10 for the final 17 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime.

Carolina nearly avoided penalty kicks but junior Avery Patterson shot in the 109th minute clip the inside of the far post and ricochet out.

The game came down to the eighth penalty kick attempt for both sides. UNC’s Emmie Allen denied Mackenzie Pluck’s attempt before senior Emily Moxley buried her shot to seal the victory.

North Carolina will play in its 28th ACC Championship match on Sunday. The Tar Heels are 22-4-1 in titles matches.
