CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Five members of the Virginia women’s soccer team were recognized by the Atlantic Coast Conference on Wednesday (Nov. 2) when the league announced the All-ACC teams and annual honors. The All-ACC teams are selected by a vote of ACC coaches.
Lia Godfrey was named an All-ACC first team selection, while Haley Hopkins was named a second team selection and Maggie Cagle and Alexa Spaanstra were both named third team selections. Cagle was joined by Jill Flammia on the league’s All-Freshman team.
Godfrey earns All-ACC honors for the third straight season after posting six goals and four assists this season. She hit the game-winning goals at No. 2 North Carolina and No. 4 Duke in the regular season, helping UVA cap a three-goal rally in the win over the Tar Heels and posting the 1-0 victory over the Blue Devils. She also assisted on the Cavaliers’ goal against Duke in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championship. Godfrey earned ACC Player of the Week honors following the Hoos win over the Blue Devils in the regular-season meeting.
Hopkins earns All-ACC honors for the second consecutive season. She leads the Cavaliers with 11 goals this season and has four assists to lead the team with 26 points. She has hit three game-winning goals this season and her 11 goals is tied for second most in the ACC. She was twice named ACC Player of the Week this season.
Spaanstra earns All-ACC honors for a fifth consecutive season with her selection this fall. Spaanstra has tallied seven goals and five assists this season and hit game winners against NC State and Miami to close out the regular season. She also hit the equalizer at No. 2 North Carolina in the second-half rally for the Hoos. This season, she took over the top spot in program history with 103 career starts heading into the NCAA Tournament.
Cagle is an All-ACC selection for the first time as the freshman leads the team with nine assists and has added three goals this season. She is third in the ACC in total assists. Five of Cagle’s assists have come on game-winning goals which is tied for the fourth most nationally and two of her three goals are game-winning goals – including the game winner against Wake Forest. Cagle also earned All-Freshman honors this season.
Flammia earned a spot on the All-Freshman team alongside Cagle after posting three goals this season, including scores against Syracuse and Virginia Tech. Flammia has appeared in 11 matches this season, including…
