Arsenal legend David Seaman thinks Gabriel Jesus’ confidence could be “a bit lower” than fans think after his goalless run continued at the weekend.
The Gunners have been brilliant so far this season with Mikel Arteta’s side winning ten of their 12 Premier League fixtures.
That wonderful run of form means they are top of the table, two points clear of nearest rivals Manchester City and eight points clear of fifth-placed Man Utd, who occupy the spot just outside the Champions League places.
Arsenal have improved from last season with new signing Jesus – who swapped Man City for the Emirates Stadium in the summer – helping bring a new dynamic to Arteta’s side.
However, the Brazilian is going through a bit of a goalless spell despite still turning in good performances with Jesus failing to score in his last seven matches in all competitions.
He provided two assists at the weekend in a 5-0 victory over Nottingham Forest but didn’t get on the scoresheet and Seaman thinks it will have impacted his confidence.
Seaman said on Seaman Says: “The fans were so desperate for Jesus to score [on Sunday]. Every time he was around the box, they were saying, ‘Give it to Jesus! Give it to Jesus!’.
“They were saying his confidence is low, because he hasn’t scored for a while.
“I was thinking it might actually be a bit lower you know, because we have scored five and he hasn’t scored one. You know, so it’s a bit… it was weird.
“As soon as Odegaard gets [the ball] he looks for Jesus, they are looking for these little passes.”
Former Arsenal defender Mikael Silvestre has urged Kieran Tierney to “keep patient” in his search for regular minutes under Arteta.
Tierney has suffered from a lot of injury issues since making the move from Celtic in 2019 but now he’s fully fit he’s still struggling for Premier League starts.
“‘It’s true that the manager [Mikel Arteta] is using options that we wouldn’t guess at the beginning of the season,” Silvestre told bettingexpert.
“You know, Ben White at right-back and Tomiyasu at left-back against [Mohamed] Salah, for instance.
“There’s a lot of competition. Tierney is a good player so again, it’s not easy to deal with these situations.
“But he also has a very good mentality, he just needs to keep patient and wait for opportunities. There will be a lot of games to play.”
