SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC head coach Alen Marcina, goalkeeper Jordan Farr and defender Mitchell Taintor have all been named finalists for the 2022 USL Championship Awards, the league announced today. Marcina is a finalist for Coach of the Year, Farr is a finalist for Goalkeeper of the Year and Taintor is a finalist for Defender of the Year.
Marcina is a finalist for Coach of the Year after guiding San Antonio FC to one of the best regular seasons in USL Championship history. Under Marcina, the squad tied league records for total wins (24), road wins (13) and shutouts (17) while posting the second most points (77) in a season in league history. The third-year coach guided the team to success despite 117 total matches missed due to injury this season and 34 different lineups in 35 games.
On the field, Farr tied a league record for single-season shutouts with 15, not including a shutout of Charleston Battery in which Farr was subbed off late for Matt Cardone – Cardone’s final appearance with SAFC before retiring after the match. Farr finished the season with a 75.8 save percentage and a 0.78 goals-against average. Farr’s strong season resulted in being named to the All-League First Team yesterday, as well as being named the league’s Player of the Month twice this season.
Taintor spent parts of the last two season in the Alamo City on loan, before signing in the offseason to join the squad. In his first full season, the centerback led the SAFC defense to equal a league-record for single-season team shutouts with 17, earning himself a spot on the league Team of the Week six different times during the season. Defensively, Taintor led the team in interceptions (72) and blocks (24) while finishing third in clearances with 106.
Offensively, Taintor posted a career-best five goals and an assist to emerge as a dangerous set piece threat. Taintor joined Jordan Farr on the All-League First Team yesterday for the first time in his career.
Winners for Goalkeeper and Defender of the Year honors will be announced Tuesday, Nov. 8, while the Coach of the Year winner will be unveiled Wednesday, Nov. 9.
