GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Clemson, North Carolina, Pitt and Virginia Tech advanced through the first round of the 2022 ACC Men’s Soccer Championship Wednesday evening. The No. 12 seed Hokies scored the lone upset of the evening, winning 2-1 at No. 5 seed Louisville and becoming the first 12-seed to win a tournament game since the field expanded to 12 teams in 2016.

No. 6 seed Pitt outlasted No. 11 NC State, 4-1 in overtime. No. 7 UNC topped No. 10 Boston College, 1-0, and No. 8 Clemson concluded the evening with a 3-1 win over No. 9 Notre Dame.

 

The quarterfinal round features a quadruple-header on Sunday, Nov. 6, on ACCN and begins at 2 p.m. with No. 4 seed Wake Forest hosting Virginia Tech. No. 3 seed Virginia entertains Pitt at 4 p.m., followed by No. 2 seed Syracuse hosting North Carolina at 6 p.m. Top-seeded Duke wraps up the quarterfinals by facing Clemson at 8 p.m.

 

The semifinals will be played Wednesday, Nov. 9, at campus sites, with the matches airing on ACC Network at 5 and 7 p.m. The championship match will be broadcast from WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina, on ESPNU on Sunday, Nov. 13 at noon.

 

Tickets are on sale now for the championship match at WakeMed Soccer Park and can be purchased HERE. General admission tickets are $10. Admission is free for youth ages 18 and under, as well as students of ACC institutions (with valid ID). 

 

No. 12 Virginia Tech 2, No. 5 Louisville 1

After both teams tallied a goal in the first half, Virginia Tech struck on a counterattack in the 55th minute, as Misei Yoshizawa sent a ball through and found Ethan Ballek, who finished for his first goal of the season. Yoshizawa assisted on both of the Hokies’ goals.

 

No. 6 Pitt 4, No. 11 NC State 1 (OT)

Pitt’s Michael Sullivan recorded a brace, scoring the game’s opening goal in the 12th minute and then adding the eventual game-winner just 1:07 into overtime, the first of three Panthers’ goals in the 20 minutes of the extra session. NC State’s Luke Hille leveled the score in the 26th minute for his third goal of the season.
