Detrizio Nets Brace, Comeback Falls Short at USC

LOS ANGELES – The Washington State women’s soccer team (8-6-4, 2-5-3) lost at No. 18 USC, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at McAlister Field. The Cougars fell behind early before WSU junior Margie Detrizio scored two goals to give the Cougs the lead. The Trojans scored two unanswered goals around the hour mark to secure the victory.
 
In the 4th minute, USC jumped out to an early lead, playing a give-and-go down the left side before a late-arriving run from USC’s Zoe Burns gave her time and space to pick out the far post past a diving Nadia Cooper.
 
The Cougars responded 20 minutes later as Detrizio netted her first goal of the afternoon to draw the match, 1-1. Senior Grayson Lynch lofted a corner kick into the Trojans’ 6-yard box where senior Sydney Studer met the service with her head. The opportunity was blocked, but a goal mouth scramble gave Detrizio time to poke the loose ball across the line for her ninth goal of the season.
 
The sides entered the half knotted at 1-1 with the Cougars taking a 3-2 upper hand in shots on goal.
 
The quality chances continued in the second half, as Detrizio pressed forward, looking for the game-winner. Her opportunity would arrive in the 49th minute, taking a pass from Mykiaa Minniss and deftly turning her defender near midfield.
