Mauricio Pochettino is the bookies’ favourite to replace Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa ahead of former No 2 Michael Beale – while Thomas Frank, Sean Dyche and Unai Emery are also in the running

Mauricio Pochettino is odds-on favourite to take over at Aston Villa after Steven Gerrard was sacked on Thursday.  

Gerrard got the chop after a 3-0 defeat at Craven Cottage left them just a point above the relegation zone and one win in their last nine Premier League games.

And according to Oddschecker, former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain manager Pochettino – sacked by the French giants in July – is most likely to replace Gerrard with the struggling Midlands side.

His former No 2 Michael Beale, now at Queens Park Rangers, is second favourite to take over

Second favourite is Gerrard’s former assistant manager Michael Beale, who worked as No 2 under the former Liverpool and England midfielder at Rangers and Villa before leaving for Championship side Queens Park Rangers in June.

Beale, 42, has led QPR to the top of the table and attracted interest from Villa’s Premier League rivals Wolves, before he turned down their approaches. A return to Villa Park may now be on the cards.

Also in the running, according to the bookies, are Thomas Frank, Sean Dyche and Unai Emery.
