Gerrard Sacked by Aston Villa Less Than 12 Months After Appointment

Steven Gerrard has been sacked as Aston Villa manager less than 12 months after his appointment following their dismal 3-0 loss to Fulham on Thursday.

The 3-0 defeat left the Villans sitting 17th with nine points from 11 games, having failed to win in their past four games.

Gerrard had taken over at Villa Park in November last year on a three-year deal having led Rangers to the Scottish Premiership in 2021.

Villa had avoided relegation in 2021-22, finishing 14th with 45 points, 10 above the drop zone.

But Villa took action after Thursday’s loss to newly-promoted Fulham with the club confirming: “Aston Villa Football Club can confirm that Head Coach Steven Gerrard has left the club with immediate effect.”

A club spokesman said: “We would like to thank Steven for his hard work and commitment and wish him well for the future.”

Gerrard is the fifth manager to change jobs this Premier League season, following Scott Parker, Thomas Tuchel and Bruno Lage, while Graham Potter left Brighton to move to Chelsea.

Fulham fans chanted “getting sacked in the morning” in Thursday’s game where Villa were poor, not helped by a Douglas Luiz red card.

“The performance was nowhere near good enough,” Gerrard said after the game.

“Tonight was a tough night for me personally. We will see what happens but I understand the situation we are in.”

Villa acted approximately one hour after the game.
