Romano backs nine-goal striker to be ‘great solution’ for Red Devils, gives update on De Gea

Man Utd-linked David

Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Man Utd will make a decision on David De Gea’s future in the coming months after he proclaimed that he wants to stay.

The Spaniard kept a clean sheet as Man Utd were made to settle for a point against Newcastle United on Sunday.

The goalkeeper is out of contract next year but United do have an option to automatically extend his deal by a further year.

De Gea has made his stance clear as he has publicly stated that he wants to remain at Man Utd long-term.

The Red Devils have been linked with Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa in recent days. Romano has now stated that in the “coming months” they will make a call on De Gea’s future.

“David de Gea has spoken publicly about how happy he is at Manchester United, he made it very clear he’d like to extend his stay,” Romano wrote for Caught Offside.

“He’s also made this clear in private – the message from his agents to Manchester United is that the player wants to stay.

“United have the option to extend his contract by one more season, but during the coming months, they will decide whether or not to extend it by even longer. De Gea has been clear with his intentions, so now it’s up to the club, and to Erik ten Hag.”

United were unable to find the net against Newcastle United at Old Trafford. A few days earlier, it took them 34 shots to score in the 1-0 win over Omonia Nicosia.

Romano has now claimed that signing Lille striker Jonathan David would be a “great solution” for Erik ten Hag’s side.

The 22-year-old has been in great form for the Ligue 1 side this term. He has grabbed nine goals and two assists in just eleven outings.

This includes five goals in his last four appearances in the league. Romano thinks David is a “really underrated” forward:

“Man Utd struggled in attack again [on Sunday] as they were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Newcastle, so will they make changes up front in January?” Romano added.

“There are some good options out there – I always mention Jonathan David as I think he’s really underrated and could be a great solution, but we have to wait for the World Cup to see which clubs will move for him.

“I think it’s just a difficult moment for Man Utd without scoring goals; and I also think Cristiano Ronaldo can never be described as a problem, only a solution for the team. I wouldn’t panic – I’m sure they will be back scoring goals very soon.”
