Gary Neville has offered advice to Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez after he spurned a chance late on against Manchester City on Sunday.
Nunez was brought on by Jurgen Klopp with around 20 minutes to go and the forward was in the thick of the action.
Mohamed Salah found the net after being set up by Alisson a few minutes after Nunez was subbed on.
Moments after Liverpool went ahead, Nunez did well as he sprinted towards the goal. Salah was free and should have been played in but the summer signing went alone and he shot wide.
Nunez had another chance to score in stoppage time when Man City were chasing the game.
The ball broke for the ex-Benfica star and he only had Ederson to beat. But he did not get good contact on his attempted chip so the ball was cleared.
This did not matter too much in the end as Liverpool hung on to record a much-needed victory.
They will hope that this win kickstart their season after they initially made a ponderous start to the campaign.
Nunez cost Liverpool an initial £64m in the summer and he has shown signs that he will prove to be a great signing.
But when discussing his first missed chance, Neville suggested that Nunez is “raw when he plays” at the moment.
“It’s not good from Nunez,” Neville said on Sky Sports.
“If he sees him, he should pass it, it’s not good. If he doesn’t see him, it’s not good because he’s not got his head up – he had to play that pass to Mo Salah.
“He’s just a little frantic and raw when he plays, he’s just got to slow himself down a little bit in the final third and be a bit more composed.”
Ex-Premier League boss Alex McLeish has been impressed by Nunez, however. He believes that the “goals will come” for the Liverpool star.
“His goal against Rangers was a top, instinctive finish,” McLeish told Football Insider.
“You see that from the best strikers. You don’t even think about it, you just stick the ball in the back of the net.
“We haven’t seen enough of that from him this season but if he can do more of that then you start to see why Liverpool paid all that money to get him in.
“For the money they spent, the goals need to come. I think we are at the point now where they will come. I think we could see him score a few in his next games just because of the confidence.
“He will always get chances in that team so if he can start converting even some of those chances then Liverpool have a real talent there.”
